St. Tammany Parish Millage Renewals
This Saturday, April 21st, we have the opportunity to vote on the renewals of three millages that fund our local schools.
St. Tammany Parish Public Schools have the highest ACT scores in Louisiana, and rank well above both state and national averages. Our students excel in all areas, are well prepared for college and the workforce, and are the linchpin in our local economy. As evidence of the academic excellence of our school system, last year St. Tammany students received more than $54 million in scholarships to any number of colleges and universities.
The three millages on the ballot are not new. Two of them have been in place since 1963, and once since 1983, so renewal of these millages will not increase our taxes. On the contrary, these millages stimulate our economy by providing jobs and an exceptionally well-trained workforce. These millages pay for instructional materials, curriculum and instructional programs, repairs to schools, music, art and P.E. programs, and salaries and benefits. Without them, the system could be forced to make deep cuts to the educational services provided our children.
While our board of directors did not formally adopt a position on these taxes, we do support overall education improvements, and we always encourage our members and citizens to VOTE.
